JVM version?

Yes, if you're running on a 1.5 or newer JVM, and have a JDK installed.  Use 
jps to find the process id Tomcat is using, then jstack to take a thread dump.  
Taking a thread dump in a normally running situation will give you an idea of 
what things should look like, so you can compare it to what you get when the 
server becomes unresponsive.
