Thank You very much, that seems to be the point for me. With mpm-prefork there is only one connection and if that cannot be closed due to timeout, I have a problem with firewall dropping. I posted already on this list on howto configure ajp keepalive, as an alternative. But on the other hand it seems not to be very wise to hold every connection open forever? I think we will use the Apache that comes with the distribution, and that's 2.2.9, su upgrading is not an option. So I think we switch back to mod_jk.
