Folks: Thanks so much for your help, guidance and support. By fixing the JAVA_HOME environment variable to point to the SDK I was able to successfully start the Tomcat 4.1 server.
Now I will proceed with the next challenges ahead. Also note that Tomcat allow specification of command-line properties via environment variables, and you may have one with an invalid value.
