The startup.sh script should generate a call to "catalina.sh start", which in
turn should generate a java command line that includes a -classpath of
$CATALINA_HOME/bin/bootstrap.jar. You can also do "catalina.sh run" directly,
if you want to see what it's doing.

Make sure you do not have a CLASSPATH environment variable set to anything
(this is critical), and that JAVA_HOME is set to the location of your JDK. (If
you only have a JRE, set JRE_HOME instead.) Also insure that neither
CATALINA_OPTS nor JAVA_OPTS are present for your initial testing.
