Well, I just don't believe it will work correctly.
I'd rather do one of the following:
1. run apache httpd with php in front and then mod_proxy_ajp to
tomcat. httpd's mod_rewrite is very very flexible
2. run tomcat in front and implement a proxy filter which will do the
proxying requests to other apache httpd with php
