The space is not missing.
Now I've done your way:

  export CATALINA_OPTS="-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=8888 
-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false 
-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false"

and the 8888 port still does not appear !!!!!
