I have used Borland's OptimizeIt in the past, but I think it's a defunct product (and it's also neither free nor open source). I don't have experience with other profilers or debuggers, but lots of folks on the list have mentioned JProfiler (http://www.ej-technologies.com/products/jprofiler/overview.html) which has a free trial, but I don't believe it is free. My understanding is that it is a very good tool, though. JProbe is also brought up on the list occasionally. Also not free, also has a free trial.
