Ah-ha! I'll try setting ENABLE_CLEAR_REFERENCES to false. So WebappClassLoader sets all static class members to null. Googling ENABLE_CLEAR_REFERENCES yields lots of useful info, but before that I was having a hard time finding anything. Should this behavior be documented in the main tomcat docs, or perhaps in the FAQ?
