I downloaded the binaries apache-tomcat-6.0.14.tar.gz
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java/j2sdk1.4.2_08/
export JRE_HOME=/usr/local/java/j2sdk1.4.2_08/jre/
the tomcat is still not starting:
