Then where did the /etc/init.d/tomcat.sh come from? Did you roll your
own? Did you copy the packaged version and configure it to work with the
official distribution?

You can always do a thread dump to see what's going on. That should show
you if a thread if holding things up (like it's waiting for a lock) or
if there's a thread hanging around that should not even exist.
