well, then either

- migrate to xml-files (that's what I would do)

or

- try to use a threshold

i know the log4j-docs besides the commercial one are a pain in the
ass, however, the log4j-developers have to earn their dollars, too,
therefore, the log4j-manual (commercial) might be a good investment
here.

the solution with a threshold might not be what you want since a
threshold logs *everything* that is *not below* a certain
warning-level.

anyways, maybe you want to try out the log4j-mailing-list for a better
support (http://logging.apache.org/site/mailing-lists.html)
