Ya know, I don't do that before I install most stuff, but I *do* tend to open the source kit and read it when I want the product to do more, or when I think it's failing, or just when I don't understand why it does *that* when I say *this*. In a former position I wound up reading maybe 70% of the entire operating system over the course of several years. It really does happen. In fact I have some bits of Tomcat source on my desk right now, and a pile of somebody else's servlet code as well. -- Mark H.
