While the history of 8.5 is true, the conclusion is likely not.

The Tomcat committers generally support 3 versions of Tomcat
concurrently. When Tomcat 10.0 is released stable (and it's pretty
stable right now, actually), Tomcat 7 will be EOL'd. That's why the
EOL date for Tomcat 7 has already been announced, because 10.0 stable
is expected soon.

At that time, we'll have 10.0, 9.0, and 8.5 in active support until
it's time for 11.0 at which point we'll do the same process by
announcing 8.5's EOL and so on.

I think we are pretty good about announcing EOL dates well in advance
for Tomcat versions. If there isn't an EOL-date published, then there
isn't one! :)
