All of the below is my current understanding of the Tomcat community's intentions. The timescales involved are years so a lot could change in that time. Tomcat 9.0.x - roughly monthly Tomcat 8.5.x - roughly monthly Tomcat 8.0.x - infrequently Tomcat 7.0.x - roughly monthly Tomcat 6.0.x - reached EOL - last release expected shortly 8.x development is focussed on 8.5.x rather than 8.0.x. There may be further 8.0.x releases in response to significant bugs or security issues but as time progresses such releases will become less frequent. Major Tomcat versions are aligned to the Java EE specification. Tomcat 9 will continue with milestone releases until: - The Java EE 8 specifications are published - Tomcat 9 has updated to the final Java EE 8 APIs Tomcat 9 will then produce alpha releases until: - The Java EE 8 specifications have been completed Tomcat 9 will the produce beta releases until: - The community agrees that Tomcat 9 is ready for production Subsequent releases will be stable releases. I suspect the time to transition from milestone to stable will be quite short. Tomcat 10 development will start when work starts on Java EE 9. The Tomcat community aims to support 3 major versions in parallel so Tomcat 7 EOL will be around the time development starts seriously for Tomcat 10. The Tomcat community aims to provide a minimum of 12 months notice for the EOL of any major version. My best guess right now for the earliest EOL date for Tomcat 7 is end of 2019.
