I'm no expert, but... This sounds like what might happen if you have a 64-bit OS+service runner, but you have a 32-bit JVM (or vice-versa). Can you double-check that your architectures match-up for all components? The commons-daemon service runner needs to match the architecture of your JVM. Did commons-daemon print anything to its own log files?
