That was a terrible mistake. If you are going to use the package-manager, stick with the package manager. If you want to do a manual install, do it separately. You can mix-and match any of the following: 1. Tomcat 6 via package-manager 2. Tomcat 6 via tomcat.apache.org 3. Tomcat 7 via package-manager 4. Tomcat 7 via tomcat.apache.org Most folks recommend you go with #2 and #4 because we (on the mailing list) can be the most helpful. My experience is that apt-based packages for Tomcat are fairly reasonable to deal with. If you'd prefer to use a package-manager version of Tomcat, go for it. Just understand that these things are usually woefully out of date. For some reason, Tomcat patches simply don't make it into package-manager repositories. I think it's because Tomcat doesn't produce actual patches like the httpd team does. So, it's much more difficult for package-managers to consume individual fixes for e.g. security fixes while keeping the package itself as super-stable as they like things to be (at least I think this is what the Debian folks do). > About the second question.
