agree with Chuck. It used to work in previous versions of Tomcat (up to 5.5.9 if I'm correct) but it stopped behaving like this in more recent versions (eg 5.5.16). The doc explicitely says not to use the path attribute in context files deployed within your war's META-INF or your server's conf/Cataline/localhost.
