This may well go back to what I said about putting the same thing in two
places.  In this case, you have placed an app in webapps/gridsphere, but
also referenced the same location from
conf/Catalina/localhost/portal.xml; I don't know which will take
precedence, or if you'll get the app deployed twice, once under the
gridsphere, once under portal.

You might try putting the app someplace other than under Tomcat's
webapps directory, thus ensuring that only the portal.xml file (or
gridsphere.xml, whichever you're using) from conf/Catalina/localhost can
be used to deploy it.  You must also not have a context.xml in the
webapp's META-INF directory.
