I've been trying to research a Tomcat question without bothering anyone
but I'm not having any luck. I found the archives for this list, but it
consists of about 14K messages and no search mechanism. How do I use
it? I thought I'd first try to do all the research I could before
asking a question that someone may have already answered, but I'm
finding it impenetrable. (Google didn't help, either.)

The question I need to answer is this: I want the default behavior of
the server to NOT list directory files, but for select applications, I
want to enable it. The first part is easy: just set the <listings>
element to false in the conf/web.xml file. That works fine. But how do
I selectively ENABLE directory listing for certain applications? In
particular, I have an "application" that does absolutely nothing. No
servlets, jsps, or anything. The purpose is simply to be able to dump
files there so that authorized users can log in and view/download them.
(That application has security enabled so someone must log in to see
it.) Obviously, I'd like the user to be able to see the directory
listing for this area.

I'm sure this has been answered before, but as I said, the archives
aren't much use. (By the way, it took me TWO DAYS to successfully
subscribe to this list. The TomCat site has links to pages that list a
variety of mailings lists. Every one I tried before this one came back
as a mail failure, including, ironically, the "help with this mailing
list" address. Also, there are zero, and I do mean ZERO, instructions
on just how to subscribe. Whoever maintains this needs to understand
that there are lots of mailing list programs out there and there isn't a
universal subscribe or sign-on mechanism. Some require your email in
the body, while others insist on an empty body. It is incredibly
frustrating, not to mention Dilbertesque, to be unable to ask a question
about the list without first being a member of the list. A short
paragraph of...gasp!...documentation would do a world of good.)

Thanks,
- Carl Dreher
