I haven't played a lot with @Environmental actually, i'm going to experiment some tests :D

It's not a callback. :) Actually, it's quite simple: it replaces the field by a call to Request.getParameter(), and replacing the field by a method call is something that Tapestry and Tapestry-IoC provides and it's easy to use.
