Indeed there was a problem with YUI compressor.
Removing file js-1.6R7.jar from the classpath, fixed the problem.

What version of tapestry are you using?

My guess is that it's either the GZIP filter or YUI compressor that are causing 
this problem. I'd start by turning them off one at a time to find the culprit.

Disable YUI compressor in pom.xml
