Howard's JS rewrite has mad a lot of progress in recent weeks, and he has said a couple of times that he hopes to have something ready (for at least an alpha release) by the end of the year. My guess is that it won't really be usable until that alpha release, but that's just my perception based on his commits and tweets. I suppose only Howard can give a more concrete status.
