The solution will depend on if you are using the default clientside library (prototype) or if you are using tapestry-jquery. It also depends on whether you need to fire a serverside event or not.
Take a look at the onEvent mixin example in JumpStart for inspiration [1]. In this example a serverside event is fired on the "keyup" event on a field.
