I'm also interested in why this is not a good approach - the plumbing may be a little unwieldy but general usage is very convenient. Are there performance issues with the approach?

I advise anyone to not use it. Why? I am using it in some projects without any problems. If it is that bad - someone should remove it from the wiki. It is the first place users are looking for solutions. Could you provide a better solution to the problem? (Maybe even integrate it with tapestry, as it is a very common problem).
