I've evaluated lots of different VPS providers, and I haven't found anybody offering more RAM for the same price than http://tektonic.net. If you know your way around Linux distros, their unmanaged plans are great. I've been a very happy user for a few years. But still, can't beat free - Google App Engine is a good choice if you just want to host a Java webapp.
