Thank you all for your quick responses. I've just tried again and have exactly the same error. I am using
maven 2.0.10. Also used 2.0.9 java 1.5.0_12 windows XP sp2. I am behind the company firewall and have had to modify the maven settings.xml file. I have cleaned the maven repository as Howard suggested. Maven does start downloading the dependencies after the repository is cleared so the information in settings.xml is correct.
