I discovered another pitfall: after I had a working solution in my stripped down test case, I added the feature into a much more complex page with a large form, only to find out that it still does not work.
It took me quite a while to find out, that my dynamic update of parts of the page only works, when the HTML is well formed. So no unclosed <br> tags, no unclosed <img> tags!
