Currently, Tapestry doesn't have a built-in way to accomplish what you want. You will see a property update when the form containing the Select component is submitted. The containing Form component will fire a series of events: prepare, then validate, then success or failure, then submit.
Using Ajax techniques, it would be possible to add behavior you are suggesting, it's simply not built in.
