ID of DOJO objects?

If I have a Datepicker, 

        <span jwcid="[EMAIL PROTECTED]" value="ognl:filterStartDate" /> 

Does that mean the name of it is startDate? Or am I missing something else? I'm 
getting errors trying to do :

        datepicker = dojo.widget.byId('startDate'); 

It's staying undefined.
