Really? I didn't feel like TestNG was any harder to learn than junit...In fact it felt like it made more sense than the former ;)
Like many things, junit4 is simply a response to TestNG. There is so much more going on. I think they also use it in a couple places at google. (maybe I'm wrong, but the creator is a senior eng there) I'm sort of a small contributor to the library as well, so my opinions are definitely biased...
