You said it yourself: because it would break existing standards. That's reason enough not to mess with things. The design dates back to a time when it was important to simplify mail actually being delivered, which it does. Hence, it is not flawed, it is just a case of not anticipating that one day people might abuse the mechanics. Even today, I believe it is more important to have e-mail and mailing lists actually work than to prevent abuse. If you happen to come up with a magic pill, feel free to crate RFCs that one day might supersede SMTP et al. -Ralph
