I stand corrected-- I had tested on another machine that used a forwarding server and had seen different results that did NOT include the root servers (it queried the local router, then the Verizon forwarder, then uribl directly) -- but that was probably either because Verizon does DNS hijacking or a difference between the dig implementations on MacOS and Ubuntu.
