frankly don't *premature stop reading* if you don't want others stop explaining you your own operating system wasting their time - yum even did output why it installs SA while solving dependencies
_______________________________________________ AGAIN:yum don't touch anything which is not installed as RPM as long there is no dependency, hence build rpm packages on RPM systems so your recent version would never be mangeled by YUM
the reason like was that any other package got a bugfix and "Require: spamassassin", the rpmdb did not know about your manual installed and so yum pulled the dependency
in case your spamassassin 3.4 build would have been packed and installed as RPM that dependency would have been satisfied without a downgrade because the higher version
*except* you do "yum distro-sync" which is expected to downgrade in case manual built packages are not in a repo and the current enabled repos have only a lower version - "distro-sync" is as example the way to go if you have enabled testing-repos and want go back to the stable packages
