Thanks for the response. I'm actually not using spamc/spamd; just running
spamassassin from procmail. But anyway, /etc/resolv.conf is world
readable and contains valid nameserver entries.

No, I'm not running it in a chrooted environment of any kind.

There are no dns directive in my local.cf.

Any further thoughts?

Try:

  $ spamassassin -D dns -t <test.msg
