Understood, though it'll be a while before I can upgrade to 3.4 due to the

Probably best if you install 3.4.0 (or even trunk) on a test system and throw the offending email onto that server and run sa-learn on that box with -D.

Then we can start discussing apples to apples and add more debugging if needed.
