/etc/rc.d/init.d is the actual physical directory path.
/etc/init.d is a symbolic link of /etc/rc.d/init.d

Example listing from /etc directory shown below:
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root    root      11 Jul  5  2007 init.d -> rc.d/init.d
