The only time I've ever seen anything like this was on my old SA 2.x
when it didn't properly handle 'quoted printable' and stuff like that.
The problem is, by the time you read mail in almost any client, it has
made subtle 'changes' and removed these telltale codes that break the
tests that seem to match the message 'visible' in your client.
Is it possible to get a look into your raw mailbox directly with
a text editor? Does it look any different?
