Spamassassin port for freebsd should work just fine.
I am running in inside freebsd jails (under amavisd also)

And it it kept up to date (by me), and even small 'fixes' added in between
revisions.

Ger rid of (wipe out the jail,) get rid of the cpan stuff, all the right
dependencies are tracked in the port. If you don't, then all bets are off.

Easy install:
cd /usr/ports/mail/p5-Mail-SpamAssassin
make install
(it will ask you several options about sql, db, some other options)

If you have the same problem with the freebsd port, fill out a PR at
www.freebsd.org/support.html
