Having tried apt-get remove spamassassin and then apt-get install spamassassin a number of times there was no difference.
However, I removed it and its dependencies using apt-get autoremove, purged it, apt-get clean to clear the cache and then apt-get install spamassassin and it now works. Why, I can't answer. May I thank everyone who took the time to reply to me.
