I think it's also used in Germany. The two domain names function identically, and I even think if someone sends a message to either [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED], both will reach you - ie. you can use them interchangeably. But whether you can officially register for one or the other probably depends on the county you're in.

If I remember it right,googlemail.com is a domain used instead of gmail.com in 
UK.

There already was a gmail in UK...
