I use SA in conjunction with amavisd-new.  So there answer to your
question is, I'm not sure.  :)
  
Amavis (Well, amavisd-new) caches it's own Mail::SpamAssassin instance, 
so in essence it is its own spamd. Thus, Amavis must be restarted after 
editing your .cf files.
