Same thing when running make test from source as well. Any help is appreciated!
Solved. This system had PowerDNS running, which was hogging the CPU. Shutting it off allowed make test to run successfully. It's not clear whether it was simply a lack of resources causing make test to fail, or whether PowerDNS was actually interfering (I doubt that since network tests were not being done).
