Sure, you could put a version number in the code/comments in innumerable ways.

Justin and I haven't really been talking about the plugin itself, anyway, just about how plugins handle adding custom headers.

First, the plugin is Troels Hansen's, all credit goes to him. The only suggestion I made to his code was to add the X-Spam-Virus header to both spam and ham (it originally only added it to spam). The version you just re-posted, by replying to my old post, is where I made and implemented that suggestion.

Troels' next post after mine indicated that he implemented the same thing in a slightly different way and uploaded it to the wiki. The wiki version IS the current version, although both the version you reposted and the wiki version are functionally equivalent.
