I don't know why either. Here are a couple of simple rules I have that,
while now a little out of date, worked really well, so I know they hit:

body LW_300K /\$300,000[^\d,]/
All I can think of is that ancient perl is somehow giving you problems. It
was technically too old even for 2.63, as best I recall.
Is there any chance that you can install a newer perl as a second
installation for SA to use, and keep the antique for the system to use? I'm
pretty sure that other people that had 5.005 shipped with their systems have
been able to do this.
