Which distribution do you use? Did you upgrade from 2.6x or from 3.0.1?

With SuSE 9.1 and Upgrade from 2.64 to 3.0.1 or above 
1. You have to modify the rcspamd script because some SuSE options are obsolet 
and spamd will not start.
2. SuSE has modified the directories  where spamassassin is installed. Look 
for dublicates of spamc and spamd under /usr (bin or sbin if i remember 
right)
3. Check if you are using the correct version with spamc -h
4. Check if port 783 is open. (nmap localhost or telnet localhost 783)
4a.if yes: tcpdump may help to find out what happened.
