I figured this out. In case someone else sees this problem, here's the solution:
The problem stemmed from DB_File. I tried to recompile DB_File and it failed during testing. After a little goofing around, I figured out I needed to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH during runtime. This really sucks because that means I have to wrap an environment setup script around all my startup/restart scripts. The fix for that problem on my SUN Solaris 8 system was to do a "crle -l /usr/lib -l /usr/local/lib". Doing this permanently globally added a library to the run time environment for any user.
