If you're new to SpamAssassin, you're best bet is to integrate it and
Sendmail with a fully customizable integration package. Two such
packages are
MailScanner http://www.mailscanner.info - My favorite, well documented, and dead simple to install.
Amavisd-new http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/
Also, my favorite:
MIMEDefang http://www.mimedefang.org
Unfortunately, I cannot compare and contrast with the two mentioned above as I have never used them.
