If they're running linux: throw out the raid controller, replace with ZFS on 2 SSDs and 4 spinning rust drives. You're not going to have more i/o than your drives and bus can support, but with ZFS's 2-level read cache (RAM and SSD) you could get close to saturating the bus. In theory.
