If you have an index large enough that it must be sharded across multiple machines, SolrCloud is far easier than manual sharding. I've done manual sharding -- with versions before 4.0, when SolrCloud made its debut. If SolrCloud had existed when I built those indexes, I would have used SolrCloud.
