Where is the automation documented, e.g. what does it exactly?
Looks I did not find this gem yet. But I am really interested.

No specific doc about this, just the whole working of sogo.

I am only using SOGo for a very small scale, but so far I had to
    define both
calendar and contact connection with one CalDAV/CardDAV URL per
    user for both
cases (SOGo connector vs. Thunderbird internal plus CardBook).
How could I have made this easier ("automatic") with the SOGo
    connector?

Following the docs. The automation I mean is that you tailor the integrator, an update server, deploy the integrator on TB and it pulls the connector, lightning and whatever other extension you said to - easy to deploy dozens of extensions if you want and keep consistency over the network. For the end user, no config, no setup, nothing, it just uses your login info already there. Not to mention you can also define/force/suggest various prefs on TB - something like about:config.

Regards.
